Gap Year at William Penn House

Are you getting ready to graduate high school, and not sure what to do next? While taking time out between high school and college, you can take time in one of our most unique and vibrant cities – Washington, DC. William Penn House’s Gap Year Program is an opportunity for you to get experience living and working with other interested, curious young people, while exploring and developing your own passions. It combines social service and non-profit work with hands-on experience developing programs and day-to-day operations of running an organization. 
During the Gap Year program, you will live in a supportive community. Cooking your meals, managing your time, learning job responsibilities, and planning and developing your own ambitious projects will help to prepare you will for your next steps.  
William Penn House is a Quaker organization that nurtures the practice of Radical Hospitality in our lodging and through our seminars and Workcamps. It is a practice that nurtures the ability of all people to speak their “truth” as we address the social issues of our times. .  
The Details
·       Two Gap-Year students will be selected each year. 
·       Gap-Year starts in August, and goes through July. This schedule can be adjusted to accommodate needs of student.
·       Responsibilities include:
o   Hospitality work – scheduling and checking-in guests, managing internet bookings
o   Participation in and development of youth and young adult seminars and Workcamps
o   Learning about the roles of grassroots, lobbying and political organizations in addressing social justice issues
o   Identifying your own leadings and exploring possible actions
o   Sharing living space and learning to manage and prioritize your own time
·       Lodging: Room and board is included. Students will share a room. Students will be responsible for recreational expenses.
·       Students will receive supervision, mentoring and nurturing from staff and interns at William Penn House.
·       Cost: $5000
 
Ideal candidates are students familiar with the Quaker Testimonies and have connection to the Quaker community either through Monthly/Yearly Meeting, or through Friends Schools.
