Elder Friend(s) in Residence
How do we engage Quakers of all ages? Through our internship program we provide a process to develop our next generation of Quaker leaders. Through our Washington Quaker Workcamps, we offer the opportunity for the faith of our youth to be grounded in Quaker service. And through our Teachers of Peace and other seminars based on the testimonies we explore our Quaker Faith in the world with middle and high school students. But we can all be enriched by the presence of our greatest Quaker asset, our Quaker seniors.
We seek a retired Quaker individual or couple to join the William Penn House staff for a period of 4 months to one year. We see this person/couple as not only an integral part of our staff but as a resource to William Penn House and the community that we serve, talking with interested guests and staff about Quakerism and helping ground the life of the House in the Life of the Spirit.
The primary duties are the same as the rest of the hospitality staff:
- Living in community with fellow staff members.
- Sharing in the spiritual life of the House and participating in House sponsored events.
- Working with on-line registration system and maintaining data base.
- Inputting data into the database
- Helping with mailings and publicity of the House.
- Serving breakfast and cleaning up afterwards.
- Registering guests by phone, on-line and in person.
- Performing office work as needed.
- Performing other hospitality duties.
As a member of the hospitality staff, the Friend(s) in Residence is required to live at the House. Due to our small staff, we are not closed on most holidays but do close the House during Thanksgiving and Christmas.
This is a volunteer opportunity and would require a work week of 20 hours per week.
