General Directions: One needs a magnetic fare card to enter and exit the METRO Rail system. Machines are at each entrance and give back change for a $5 bill, as well as accepting singles and coins. In off peak hours (Saturday, Sunday, M-F 9:30am-3pm, M-F 8pm-6am) one can ride anywhere in the district for $1.10. It is more expensive to travel into Virginia or Maryland depending on your distance. During peak hours (M-F 6am-9:30am and M-F 3pm-8pm) fares are more expensive. You may also purchase a $20 fare card and receive a 10 percent bonus ($22 value). The card works then as a debit card until it has reached a minimum of $1.05 when you can either trade it in for another card of any amount or add fare to your card as you depart the METRO. You may also purchase a one-day pass (good all day beginning at 9:30am) for $5.
Once you have purchased your card, you put the card into the turnstile "gate" and it will come up in the center. Take the card and the turnstile will open. Be sure to keep your card as you will need it to exit. When you exit it will keep your card if it is the exact fare or give it back to you if you still have fare left over. If you have miscalculated the cost of fare or decided to travel further there are add-on fare machines to increase the value of your card to exit.

Union Station, at 1st Street and Massachusetts Avenue, is the AMTRAK Station for Washington. The MARC trains, a commuter service which operates Monday-Friday only, operates to points in Maryland including Baltimore-Washington International Airport (BWI). This service
also departs from Union Station.
From Union Station, one may either walk or take Metro Bus #96 which departs from across Massachusetts Avenue. During rush-hours, Metro Bus #97 is also available from the "loop" in front of Union Station; both of these buses stop at the corner of East Capitol and 6th Street, virtually at our door.
The Red Line Metro station is in the basement of Union Station as well as a "Food Mall" which is highly recommended for it's vast variety of ethnic food. There is also an AMC movie theater, in case you have extra time on your hands.
Cabs are also available from the front of Union Station. Cab fares work on a regulated pricing schedule. The main fare consists of the number of "zones" traveled through. From Union Station, you will have to travel through two of these zones. Fares increase with extra baggage, more than one person, and rush-hour.
The Greyhound Bus station is immediately behind Union Station. It is not recommended to walk from the Greyhound Bus station. Take a cab to our address, especially in the evening. There is a connecting bus found just outside the station, #96 Capitol Heights bus. Take it to 6th Street and East Capitol.

Or take the WASHINGTON FLYER shuttle to the West Falls Church Metro Station. Then use the Metro - see directions above - to get to William Penn House.
To get here from BALTIMORE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT you can catch a shuttle bus to the train or to the Metro. There are two trains - the MARC is the cheaper one but it doesn't run on weekends.
